Fresh Potted Herbs – Beautiful, Practical, and Delicious

There’s nothing quite like the convenience and charm of having a fresh pot of herbs right on your kitchen bench. Not only do they add a touch of greenery to your space, but having herbs within arm’s reach means you’re far more likely to use them in your cooking!

Our potted herbs are grown as a “cut-as-you-need” alternative to pre-cut herbs. They stay fresher for longer and offer a sustainable way to enjoy herbs daily. Perfect for keeping on a sunny windowsill or a well-lit kitchen worktop, these herbs thrive in protected indoor conditions.

How to Care for Your Potted Herbs

  • Unpack with care: Simply tear off the top of the packaging. You can leave the bottom sleeve on to protect your surfaces—just place a saucer underneath if needed.
  • Treat like a houseplant: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can damage the roots, so always check that they remain white and healthy. Brown or black roots may indicate too much water.
  • Light and warmth: Not all herbs enjoy direct sunlight or warm spots. Be sure to check our Herb Range and read the How to Care section for specific guidance on each variety.

Pre-Cut Herbs – Freshness Without the Fuss

Looking for a quick and easy way to enjoy fresh herbs? Our pre-cut herbs are the ultimate no-maintenance solution. Simply store them in their original packaging in the vegetable drawer of your fridge, and they’ll stay fresh for up to one week.

A Special Note About Basil

Basil is a little different from other herbs. While it often holds up well in the fridge, it’s sensitive to cold and can suffer from chill damage—resulting in blackened leaves—when stored below 10°C.

To keep your basil at its best:

  • Store it in a cool, dark place outside the fridge, or
  • Trim about 2 cm off the stems and place them in a glass of water, away from direct sunlight.

Growing Peat-Free

Peat has long been considered the gold standard in growing media—but its environmental cost is too high. The extraction and global transport of peat contribute to habitat loss and carbon emissions. That’s why Superb Herb has taken a bold step forward.

After extensive trials with a locally sourced, renewable blend of bark and wood fibre, we’re proud to announce that as of September 2025, all our crops are grown 100% peat-free. This transition supports sustainable resource management and helps protect vital ecosystems for future generations.

Water Management

Water is one of our most precious resources—and we treat it that way.

At Superb Herb, 100% of our irrigation water comes from rainwater collected across our glasshouse roofs, covering over 33,500m² of surface area. This water is stored in six on-site reservoirs, ensuring a reliable year-round supply without drawing from the local water table.

We use a closed-loop, recirculating irrigation system that significantly reduces water waste and prevents nutrient-rich runoff from entering nearby soil and waterways. These systems can save up to 40% of daily irrigation water and 35–54% of nutrients, boosting both water and nutrient efficiency.

Plastic - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Superb Herb is in the process of transitioning our cut product lines from being grown in plastic pots to trays. Trays are made from PP5 plastic, ensuring longevity and the ability for reuse for years to come. The expected life cycle for a tray is >25 years. Any damaged trays are returned to the local manufacturer where they are then recycled and repurposed.

Pots are reused. This will help reduce the emissions associated with international transport.

Packs for our cut herbs are made with recycled PET1, and are 100% recyclable in New Zealand.

Product is delivered to our customers in cardboard packaging that can be recycled, with a number of local customers receiving their orders in reusable produce crates.

Waste

All cardboard waste is recycled.

Superb Herb is a member of the AgRecovery program that ensures plastics associated with agrichemical usage are recycled into products such as underground cable covers and building materials.

Growing Practices

Superb Herb is 100% spray- and residue‑free. Our cultivation approach relies on the protective advantages of indoor production, supported by beneficial insects and microbial systems rather than chemical inputs.

Through accurate forecasting and production planning, we actively minimise green waste. Wherever possible, unsold product is redirected to community food initiatives to support local needs and reduce food waste.

Sustainability Projects in Action

Superb Herb has a number of projects underway that contribute to our overall sustainability strategy. These projects include:

· Energy/heating – Reducing and eventual removal of our reliance on gas as a fuel source.

· Biodiversity – Increasing onsite biodiversity to encourage native pest predators.

· Packaging – Compostable pots and sleeves for living product.
